Multiple citizenship is possible in many cases Germans who become naturalized citizens of another country lose their German citizenship unless they have received a retention permit prior to naturalization. For this reason, the request to retain German citizenship should always be made before requesting naturalization in another country. Other nations deny citizenship in order to control multiple citizenships. Getting citizenship in other countries can be relatively easy or difficult, depending on the country. Individuals born in countries with birthright citizenship likely have an easier time getting dual citizenship in other nations. Since 28 August 2007, Germany has allowed its nationals to acquire the citizenship of another EU country (or Switzerland) without requiring any form of permission or forfeiting their German nationality.

In certain cases, German citizens may apply for dual nationality, allowing them to acquire foreign citizenship while retaining their German citizenship. Those who have multiple nationality for one of these reasons normally pass multiple nationality on to their children. Since 28 August 2007, Germany has allowed its nationals to acquire the citizenship of another EU country (or Switzerland) without requiring any form of permission or forfeiting their German nationality. This is one of the few exemptions that will allow German nationals to hold dual citizenship.

The government struck down this requirement in 2014. In all, out of the 73 million Germans living in Germany around 4.3 million people hold at least one other citizenship.
